Treatment of Spinal Tumors Using Cyberknife Fractionated Stereotactic Radiosurgery: Pain

چکیده
Copyright © 2009 by the Congress of Neurological Surgeons Benign and malignant tumors of the spinal column and spinal cord are a common and costly clinical problem, causing significant morbidity. Metastatic disease to the spine is the most common presentation; approximately 160 000 new spinal metastases are diagnosed in the United States each year, resulting in considerable pain, functional impairment, and neurological compromise (3). In addition, primary spine and spinal cord tumors arise in 10 000 patients in the United States each year (28). The morbidity of malignant involvement of the spinal column derives from the many functions served by the spine in its normal state: support of the trunk and appendicular skeleton, basis for attachment of ligaments and muscles, bending and rotation, protection of the spinal cord and nerve roots, hematopoiesis, and mineral storage. Treatment of spinal tumors using cyberknife fractionated stereotactic radiosurgery: pain and quality-of-life assessment after treatment in 200 patients.
OBJECTIVE Benign and malignant tumors of the spine significantly impair the function and quality of life of many patients. Standard treatment options, including conventional radiotherapy and surgery, are often limited by anatomic constraints and previous treatment. Image-guided stereotactic radiosurgery using the CyberKnife system (Accuray, Inc., Sunnyvale, CA) is a novel approach in the multid...
متن کاملRemineralization in a Case of Spinal Metastasis Following Radiation Treatment with CyberKnife Stereotactic Radiosurgery
In evaluating the outcomes of stereotatic radiosurgery (SRS) in the treatment of spinal metastases, authors have looked primarily at endpoints of pain relief and tumor growth suppression. The question of structural stability has been raised, but the pattern of bone remineralization has not been investigated in detail. With traditional radiation, both tumor control and pain relief are modest, an...
متن کاملStereotactic radiosurgery as a primary treatment modality for pineal parenchymal tumors
Background: Pineal parenchymal tumor (PPT) is extremely rare and histologically heterogeneous, and the optimal treatment strategy is controversial. This study examined clinical outcomes of patients with PPT treated with cyberknife radiosurgery (CKRS) as a primary treatment modality after tumor biopsy. Materials and Methods: Between 2009 and 2018, there were six patients diagnosed with PPT who w...
متن کاملCyberknife radiosurgery in treating trigeminal neuralgia.
PURPOSE To assess the short term efficacy of Cyberknife stereotactic radiosurgical treatment of trigeminal neuralgia (TN). METHODS 17 consecutive patients with medically or surgically refractory unilateral TN were treated with Cyberknife radiosurgery. Using superimposed CT cisternogram and MR images, the target segment of the trigeminal nerve was consistently defined as a 6 mm length of nerve...
متن کاملA review of 3 current radiosurgery systems.
BACKGROUND Stereotactic radiosurgery and fractionated stereotactic radiotherapy have become widespread techniques applied to the treatment of a variety of intracranial lesions. Rapid evolution of new technologies has now enabled clinicians to treat tumors outside the cranium and down the spinal axis. This review compares 3 commercially available systems in widespread use throughout the world. ...
